Target genes have roles in B-cell activation, B-cell differentiation, inflammation, and cell cycle control. Expression of BCL6 in some B-cells early in the antigen response may skew them toward a germinal center fate, away from a plasma cell fate. The BCL6 gene is found to be frequently translocated and hypermutated in diffuse large-cell lymphoma (DLCL), and may be involved in the pathogenesis of DLCL.
